7 most common mistakes when using conditioner

Aug 25, 2025, Oli

We all want beautiful, shiny, healthy hair. So we reach for conditioner—that little bottle of magic that promises miracles. But let's be honest: who among us hasn't stood in front of the mirror and thought, "Why does my hair look tired instead of perfect?"

The truth is that conditioner isn't just a matter of "apply, rinse, done." There are mistakes we make so often that we don't even notice them anymore. And yet they are the reason why the effect isn't what we want it to be.

1. Applying conditioner to the roots? STOP!

Mistake number one – applying conditioner from the top of the head. Applying conditioner to the roots is like applying oily cream to already oily skin. The roots have their own natural "nutrition" – sebum. Conditioner should therefore only be applied to the lengths and ends. These are the areas that suffer, break, and need your attention.

2. More doesn’t mean better

You probably know the feeling – standing in the shower thinking, “I’ll use a bit more conditioner to make my hair extra soft.” Unfortunately, that’s the quickest way to overloaded, limp hair. Excess conditioner is like wearing a heavy coat over a thin sweater – it just doesn’t work. A coin-sized amount is enough. Really. And if you’re looking for the perfect partner to bring your hair lightness and natural volume, try Balmain Hair Volume Conditioner – an elegantly lightweight formula designed especially for fine hair, which enhances fullness instead of weighing it down.

3. Too short – or too long

Some people rinse conditioner out right away, while others leave it on long enough to read half a chapter of a book in the bath. Neither is ideal. Hair needs time to absorb the active ingredients – usually 1–5 minutes. Leaving it on too long can weigh hair down and reduce its elasticity.

4. Choosing the wrong product for your hair type

One of the most common mistakes is picking the wrong conditioner – using a thick, heavy formula on fine hair is like applying a rich oil-based cream to oily skin. The result is always disappointing: fine hair gets buried under the weight of the product, while dry, curly, or color-treated hair is still left thirsty for nourishment.

Dry hair benefits from intensive restorative care, such as Glamot Pure Repair Boost Conditioner, which provides deep hydration and strength. If you have curly hair, your best ally is Aveda Be Curly Advanced Conditioner, which enhances natural curl definition, boosts elasticity, and prevents frizz. For color-treated hair, we recommend L'Oréal Professionnel Série Expert Vitamino Color Spectrum Deep Conditioner, which protects color from fading, restores radiance, and strengthens hair so it stays beautiful for as long as possible.

5. Neglecting rinsing

How many times have you been in a hurry and just given your conditioner a quick rinse? The result is always the same – your hair looks greasy, loses volume, feels heavy and dull, as if you hadn’t really washed it. The truth is simple: conditioner must be rinsed out completely, otherwise residue will remain and ruin the whole effect. The solution is easy – rinse until your hair makes a soft “squeaky” sound between your fingers. Only then can you be sure it’s truly clean and ready to shine. A great helper is the Voono Conditioner Bar For Shiny Hair, a solid conditioner that makes it easy to tell when you’ve rinsed thoroughly, while also giving your hair beautiful shine, softness, and natural care.

6. Apply and leave? Mistake

Many people stick to the same routine: apply conditioner, leave it on for a few minutes, and then simply rinse it out. The problem is that this way, the product doesn’t spread evenly through all strands, leaving some hair without the care it needs. The secret is simple – while the conditioner is working, gently comb through your hair with a wide-toothed comb or your fingers. This distributes the product evenly, and your hair will thank you later with easier detangling.

7. One conditioner for the whole year? Wrong

Our hair changes throughout the year, just like the weather around us – in summer it’s exposed to sun, salt, and chlorine, while in winter it gets dried out by cold air and hats. Using the same conditioner all year long simply isn’t enough. In the warmer months, it’s best to use lightweight products with UV protection and moisturizing effects, such as Revlon Professional Eksperience Sun Pro Instant Hydrating Conditioner, which shields hair from the sun’s harmful effects and keeps it supple and healthy. In winter, on the other hand, you’ll appreciate richer, more nourishing care – a great choice is the Bumble and bumble Seaweed Conditioner, which provides deep hydration and helps combat dryness.
